[Kick off project: “Build up boarding house for 200 highland
students” in Tra Tap Elementary School, Nam Tra My district, Quang Nam
province].
Current boarding house is used for 200
students in Tra Tap Elementary School. It’s a very old cranky house, covered by
draught walls and leaking roof. Students sleep on obsolete planks. They often
get cold and wet during raining season. Since it is a remote highland area, the
school is around 20 kilometers away from their home and the road to school is
miserably hard and dangerous. A model of boarding house is an extreme hope for
these students to pursue their study.

MISERABLE
LIFE ON HIGHLAND
Raindrops
regularly fall down, insects’ crying resound all over an isolated mountain.
Most of people in Nam Tra My have imprints of suffering on their face. Severe
weather conditions such as flood, hailstone and whirlwind always challenge
these inhabitants.

Sinking
in the still of the night, current cranky boarding house of 200 students in Tra
Tap Elementary School appears with three-space temporary room, green moss
covered four walls together with very bad odour spreading from dirty wet
clothes and rotten old planks. Despite the worst conditions for living, 200 students
at ages of eight or nine are still in deep sleep. There might be a craving for
study or being together with their teachers and classmates are more important
than poor living conditions. In the midst of the night, 200 students tightly
lie on one another in a tiny three-space room. The mosquito buzz around and
they use holed blanket to cover their heads, embrace each other and keep on
sleeping.
This
is a sharing boarding-house for highland students over the years. There are unforgettable
moments such as helping each other for cooking, having lunch together with rice
and small pieces of meat or even just only veggie.
Regardless
of poor living conditions, these students always have optimistic view.

The
Fund for Love Foundation nurtures an aspiration to build an integrated boarding-house
[including boarding-house, schooling activity area, kitchen, rest rooms, water
supply system,…]. This project aims at providing a boarding house for highland
students to stay at school weekly and get them out of dangers on the way to
school. They will be able to stay at school and come back home at weekends.
It is not only a house for boarding but also
for their study together. This will improve quality of study and teaching. The
students will be learnt life skills and well trained by teachers on how to help
each other once they live together in a community. This operating model allows
teachers to reduce barriers for voluntary go-to-school campaign and utilize
effectively educational support as food subsidies from government.

A self-contained boarding house serves 200
students as well as up-coming generations of Tra Tap Elementary School, Tra Tap
commune, Nam Tra My district, Quang Nam province. Scope of this project covers: 5 rooms for
living, 1 row-of-restroom, 1 kitchen and dining area, 1 study hall, water
filtering system for living and drinking…. These works occupy approximately 400
square meters.

Total investment for this project: 900,000,000
vnd [equivalent to 40,500 US$] , including 670 mils vnd for basic construction,
150 mils vnd for interior works as tables-chairs-cabinets-beds, 80 mils vnd for
well-equipped pump together with water filtering system.
Lifetime of this project is around 15-30
years. For the first 15 years, cost of investment/student/year is computed as
900 mils/ 200 students/15 years= 300,000 vnd.
